O: Labor Day Weekend Family Carcamp to Table Mountain in Wrightwood. Let's go hike to the gold (mine)! Date: Saturday, August 30, 2014 to Monday, September 1, 2014 sponsored by Little Hikers and Junior Explorers and the Crescenta Valley Group. This Summer is almost over, but the fun is not over! Escape the heat! Let's take the kids car camping and celebrate nature in the fresh mountain air! Pack the camping gear and come with us to the Table Mountain campground across from Mt. High Ski Resort to spend the long weekend among towering pine and oak trees at 7000 feet in elevation. Table Mountain is a beautiful campground located in a nice pine forest close to the community of Wrightwood. There are also some large meadows and nature trails that are located in the campground. There is access to a nearby lake, biking trails, and a variety of hiking trails. Activities will likely include an exploratory hike to find Vincent's cabin (about 1 mile) then continue to hike to a nearby Bighorn gold mine also. ( 3.6 mi rt, 700 ft gain). The structure for the mine is perched on the hill and quite a cool sight for the hiker. However, there is no gold to be taken. 🙂 The nearby nature center has an abundance of information about the area, and we plan on visiting it. We will visit Jackson Lake and hike nearby as well (about 1 mile, 500 ft gain). If fishing is your thing, then bring your rod and your fishing license and try your luck at Jackson Lake. Pack the kids bikes (and helmets/knee pads etc), and scooters to enjoy the campsite surroundings. Activities will also include outdoor skills instructions for the kids, and nature crafts or education. In the evenings we will enjoy a roaring campfire and roasting s'mores. The first night we will "sit around the campfire & sing songs with Volunteers of the Angeles National Forest. We will even meet old man of the mountain Miner Vincent himself and listen to him tell stories of the gold rush and the last of the local grizzlies". This is a great trip for beginning campers and for young explorers. We will be happy to show you how to set a tent and roast a marshmallow. The campsite participants will need to bring their own camping gear including tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad and reusable dinnerware including plates, bowls, utensils, and cups. We will have a campfire and s'mores if weather permits and the fire danger is considered low. We will provide a continental style breakfast on Sunday and Monday mornings, and the ingredients for s'mores. ( We will ask for volunteers to help with the meals a bit). Other meals and other food is on your own. We will have a potluck dinner on Saturday evening. Price includes campsite and reservation fees, light snacks, s'mores, crafts materials, and outdoor skills instruction, and parking for 1 car/family. We will bring 1 to 2 bunches of fire wood. You are welcome to bring a log or two for the fire. Adults and kids over 12 years old: $25 (SC members), $35 (non Sierra Club members); kids younger than 12 years old: $17 (non-Sierra Club members $20). Space is very limited to 32 lucky participants! No RVs and no pets please. Parking is very limited as well (and they charge us leaders $7/day per each car), so please only 1 car per family. Trip is a fundraiser for the Little Hikers to bring families with kids outdoors. Bring board games/ card games. The parking area at Jackson Lake and the Vincent Gap area require an Adventure Pass. You can get those from ranger stations or sports stores in LA. It is a bear area, but Teddy is not invited, so let's keep the temptations away by keeping the car and sleeping areas clear of food and other items of temptation. All minors need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. All participants need to sign a Sierra Club liability waiver, which must be submitted when you check in at camp. Contact outdoorsygal at sbcglobal.net for the address to send your payment. Only payment reserves the spot. Bring rain gear for the unlikely event of rain :). Leaders: Silvia Darie, Jeff Wilson, tbd. Cancellation policy: Cancellations made 7-14 days prior to start date will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be given for cancellations made less than one week before the trip unless replacement found. If you would like to become a SC member, you are in luck. First year membership is only $15. https://tioga.sierraclub.org/joinorgive/member1.htm. As always, we do recommend trip insurance if you are concerned about having to cancel last minute.
