O: Labor Day Weekend Family Carcamp to Barton Flats August 30 - September 2, 2013

Sponsored by Little Hikers and Junior Explorers and the Crescenta Valley Group

Summer is almost over, but the fun continues! Let's take the kids car camping and celebrate nature in the fresh mountain air! Pack the camping gear and come with us to the Barton Flats campground in the San Bernandino Mountains. Spend the long weekend among towering pine and oak trees at 6300 feet elevation. There is a nearby lake and river access, biking trails and a variety of hiking trails.

Activities include a likely hike on the Rio Monte trail, five miles round trip to the Rio Monte Panorama which overlooks the deep gorge of the Santa Ana River Valley, and hikes around the Jenks Lake area. Also possible longer hike based on leader availability. Pack the kids’ bikes to enjoy the campsite surroundings area.

Activities will also include outdoor skills instructions for the kids, and nature crafts. In the evenings we will enjoy a roasting campfire and s'mores S’mores made over a roaring campfire. If fishing is your thing, then bring your rod and your license and try your luck in Jenks Lake. It is stocked with rainbow trout, largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish and catfish. Fishing is also available in the nearby Santa Ana River.

This is a great trip for beginning campers and for young explorers. The campsite offers the luxury of running water, flush toilets and free showers! Participants will need to bring their camping gear including their own tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad, cookware, and reusable dinnerware and cups. We will have a campfire and s'mores if weather permits and the fire danger is low. We will provide a welcoming pizza dinner on Friday. Other meals and other food is on your own, with a possible Saturday potluck dinner. Price includes campsite fees, light snacks, s'mores, crafts materials, and outdoor skills instruction. Adults and kids over 12 : $30 (SC members), $40 (non SC members), kids 2-12 yo $25 , kids younger than 2 are free. Space is very limited to 24 lucky participants! No RVs please. Parking is very limited as well( and they charge us leaders an additional $5/day per car), so carpooling is highly recommended. Bring board games/ card games.

All minors need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. All participants need to sign a Sierra Club liability waiver, which must be submitted when you check in at camp. Contact outdoorsygal at sbcglobal.net for the address to send your payment. Bring rain gear for the unlikely event of rain :). Leaders: Silvia Darie, Jeff Wilson, John Wilson.
