La Crescenta, CA 91214 A hiker's haven, Deukmejian Wilderness Park is 709 acres nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. The dirt trails are rugged and the elevations range from approximately 2,159 feet at the entryway to 4,775 feet at the northeast corner of the park. Views of the Crescenta Valley and Los Angeles basin can be admired from almost any point on the park trails. The Deukmejian Wilderness Trail is also home to the historic Le Mesnager Barn, which was constructed between 1914 and 1918 by Louise Le Mesnager. It has been used as a stable, a storage facility for winemaking, and as a home for the Le Mesnager family before it was sold to a property developer in 1968. The City of Glendale purchased Le Mesnager Barn and the surrounding property in 1988 and named it Deukmejian Wilderness Park, after former California governor George Deukmejian. |
Other Info | July 14, 2012 Sat Crescenta Valley Group O: Hike to a stream, brunch, and a little tree care Party time!! The annual Crescenta Valley Group picnic will take place on Sat July 14th in Deukmejian Park. The short hike of about 2- 3 miles, 500 ft gain will start at 8am and meander from new tree to new tree until we get to a lovely stream. See, we planted conifers here a few months back, and periodically we come visit and water them, and show them we care. So bring an empty 1/2 gallon to gallon bottle or two with you - we will use this to water some new trees, refill at the stream, and bring back the juice of life to the other newly planted trees. Kids with their parents are more than welcome. They will definitely like the water and the stream. Wildflowers are quite abundant after the wildfires, so more beauty to check out. At about 9am we will have brunch, continental style, topped off with fruits and sweets. Coloring station, tattoos and possibly other crafts will await the kids after their sugar high. Find out all the fun activities we have for you in the Sierra Club in the next few months. Meet new people, visit with old friends or just come to eat with us. This event is open to the public and there is no admission cost. So bring your friends. For directions, exit the 210 Freeway at Pennsylvania Ave. toward La Crescenta, turn left onto Foothill Blvd., turn right onto New York Ave., turn left onto Markridge and right on Dunsmore and right into park headquarters. For further information call Wayne Fisher at 818-353-4181.Hike leaders: Bob Thompson, Karen Buehler, Andrea Lim and John Lajeuness Activity is sponsored by the Sierra Club.
