Sept 11, 2016 9 am -2 pm O1 –Family hike and cookout on El Encanto Trail in the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument How well do you know your forest and wilderness areas? The San Gabriel Mountains is LA’s Backyard and has rivers and forests to explore – Less than an hour away from you too! Anyone who wants to learn about this breathtaking ecosystem is invited to come on a hike Sunday September 11th to see why the San Gabriels are so special and why it’s important that underserved communities receive greater access to this recreational resource. Come on out and into the recently designated San Gabriel Mountains National Monument to renew your body and spirit on this beautiful outing. Families with children are welcome to participate on this easy hike along the El Encanto Trail near Azusa that’s about a 3 mi rt with minimal elevation gain. We will drive to the trailhead after we first tour the visitor center. The hike will include discussions about the National Monument and it's history as well as intro to the plants, and geology of the region, led by Roberto Morales. There will also be a discussion about water resources in these mountains as well as conservation. Upon return to the park, you can join us for a little barbecue with hotdogs and vegetarian options too, compliments of the National Sierra Club. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and snacks. Length: The hike is 2 miles round-trip, with very little elevation gain. (Not sure exactly) Bring: hat, comfortable, closed-toed shoes, water and snacks. Lunch is optional. Location: George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates CA 90274 at the southwest corner of Palos Verdes Drive East and Palos Verdes Drive North. Meet in the parking lot at 9:50, in order to start the hike at 10:00 am. Dogs: Well-behaved dogs are welcome. They must be on leash at all times as required by LACC Section 10.32.010. Please clean up dog waste and pack out all litter. Dog waste bags are available at the trail head and at Quarter-Mile Bridge. Nature Center and Lunch (optional): The Nature Center will be open that day, from 10 am to 4 pm. You may choose to have a picnic lunch under the 'Learning Tree' and visit the nature center after the hike. All minors need to be accompanied by a parent/ or adult that has written permission from the parent. Sierra Club requires all participants sign a liability waiver.

Moderate paced 5 mi rt, 1200' gain on the Earl Cyn fire road on or near the full moon to enjoy the beautiful city lights, at the top water tank where the old "Leon" sign used to be. This old hike originated with dearly departed Sierra Club leader Julia Thomas many years ago. No beginners please, and no tigers ( very fast hikers) Meet 6:30 pm at Palm Crest School parking lot, 5025 Palm Dr, La Cañada. Dress to layer. Bring water, lugsoles, flashlight, goodies to share. O: Easy 300 ft. gain 3 mile hike thru Hart Park, Saugus Train Station, and historic downtown Newhall. See the local historic sights and wild bison. Meet 9 AM at Hart Park on Newhall Ave in downtown Newhall. Park on south side of animal enclosure. From the 14 Freeway exit at Newhall Ave and go north, Hart Park will be on the left after crossing the railroad tracks. Optional lunch at one of the local restaurants afterwards. Good hike for beginners and Little Hikers. Bring water and good walking shoes.

Easy backpacking trip from Islip Saddle (6593’) via Pacific Crest Trail, well-graded trail climbing through chaparral and then pines at Little Jimmy Campground (7500'), 2 1/4 miles one way. Pit toilets available at Campgrounds. After lunch, 2 mile RT day hike to Mt. Islip (8214’). Sunday we will hike out. Well-mannered dogs welcome.
